Rustic Restaurant where we stopped for breakfast |
The
Oaxacan Sierra Norte is considered to be one of the three best conserved areas
in Mexico, and one of the seventeen most important areas of biodiversification
in the world. There are four
hundred species of birds, three hundred and fifty different types of
butterflies, and 6,000 different plants.
Primarily inhabited by the Zapotec people the forests extend
from 200 meters to 3,000 meters above sea level.
Once more, our trusty driver Joan Harmon conquered the
twists and turns of the roads, which truly are magnificent engineering
feats. We stopped for breakfast in
a small restaurant nestled on the side of the road, and we weren't the only travelers
venturing into the mountains, to get away from the heat of the city, only to
find the mountains very cold. Hot chocolate and coffee were very much in order
for all travelers.
Nieves and friends |

Who's more curious? The goat or Nieves |
Our hike went up and down the mountains until we found our
way to a trout farm, where Nieves, as usual took advantage of the water and
took a swimOn our way back to the city, we sat on the terrace of a
beautiful restaurant, and froze while eating our freshly cooked trout.
One of 6,000 fauna in the forest |
Here in Oaxaca, as the days heat up, city dwellers will
frequently go up into the mountains to cool off and dine on trout.
